Christmas Assembly address, December 20th 2012
Dear OIS Community and Friends,
Let me talk to you about a special area of our school website:
WHY OIS- OUR FORMULA - PILLARS FOR SUCCESS
The founders of OIS dedicated at least 6 months to this discussion, prior to the opening of the school, and this has united us in a wonderful manner. Today, let me share with you how much we believe we have achieved:
- MULTICULTURAL ENVIRONMENT:the school language policy has allowed us to develop and support different mother-tongue programmes;
- VALUES AND TRADITIONS: we have implemented our four main values (Awareness, Respect, Celebration, Growth) with the framework of all traditions present in our community as part of an international heritage;
- DIFFERENT CREEDS: have been respected within the IB-Learner Profile framework, as no one has the right to take ownership of the truth;
- ECO-SCHOOL: students in their Community and Service programme (supervised by Mr. Cunha), detentions (supervised by Mr. Marques) and within the Prémio Infante D. Henrique (supervised by Mr. Davies and Mrs. Ribeiro) framework have been taking care of Quinta da Nossa Senhora da Conceição's Portuguese original species (more than 200 years old) in an eco-friendly environment;
- INTELLECTUAL RIGOUR: within the IB-MYP and IB-DP has led to students’ happiness and fulfillment as citizens of a better world;
- COMMUNITY AND SERVICE: through our Community and Service (MYP) and CAS (DP) programmes, which involve support to the Barcarena community, sports, and school performances, our students are learning to give back to society;
- ARTS AND MUSIC: our programmes have moved from strength to strength within the two IB programmes and after-school activities. A special thank you goes to the Parents Club for their strong support in this area.
As for STUDENT SUCESS:
- A SCHOOL FOR ALL: we believe that current teaching strategies and programmes accommodate different types of multiple intelligences;
- INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS: we believe that every day we help students cope with failure as a path to future success;
- TEAM BUILDING: the Student Council and our four Houses have been the strong drive for OIS' development;
- INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: we foresee a strong development in the use of our cloud in Term 2;
- UNIVERSITY PREPARATION: last but not least, I am asking our Diploma students to respect their common room as a study area once Year 13s start preparing for their mocks in January.
Season greetings,
